Disney’s Garden Club started last year when the Gifted and Talented classes were completing lessons on recycling and waste management and expressed an interest in starting a community garden.
Our club is year round and is really an entire school effort:
- Mrs. Perry, our librarian, does lessons from Agriculture in the Classroom,
- Mrs. Murphy-McNutt, our art teacher, does lessons about seasons and colors called Art in the Garden,
- Mrs. Davis, our 5th Grade teacher will be teaching our bird habitat lessons,
- Mr. Will, our ELL teacher, will be teaching our students about planting to attract migrating butterflies,
- Mrs. C. Campbell and Mrs. Stoops, our 3rd grade teachers, have assisted us with hands-on knowledge, and
- Mrs. Hatton, our custodian, scouted the perfect place for our garden and she helps maintain it every day.
School gardens engage students by providing a dynamic environment to observe, discover, experiment, nurture, and learn. They are living laboratories where interdisciplinary lessons are drawn from real life experiences, encouraging students to become active participants in the learning process.
School gardens have been shown to increase self-esteem, help students develop a sense of ownership and responsibility, and promote healthy lifestyle choices including increased fruit and vegetable consumption.
This club is for students 2nd - 6th grades, but there will be opportunities in the spring for pre-k through 1st to participate in some of our planned activities.
We will provide a healthy snack that relates to the subject we will be discussing. Students must be picked up at 4:00 pm or have permission to walk home.
