Attendance clerk Shelley Harrell has been selected as the 2021-2022 Disney Support Employee of the year!
Harrell started working at Disney in 2009 as a kindergarten and 1st grade teaching assistant. She also ran the copy room for two years before moving in her current position in the office, where she stays very busy.
"Almost all school support staff cover several roles, I guess I'm no exception to that rule," said Harrell. "I obviously do daily attendance and keep track of students coming in late and/or leaving early. I also do all our scheduling for students and am one of two people in our building who do enrollment during open enrollment. I do Disney's yearbook and monthly newsletter. I'm the site-tech and the site asset manager. I also do two recess duties every day along with every other support staff in our building & an after school duty."
Harrell has had a lifelong connection to Disney. She was a Disney Ranger in the 80s, and her three kids attended Disney. She served as classroom mom for several years and PTA president, vice president, and secretary at other times. The principal at that time, Louis Galluzzi, offered her the TA position, and her career in education officially began.
"My favorite part of the job is genuinely getting to know our families. I take a lot of pride in the fact that I know 90% of our students by first and last name, I know most of their parents by name, and I try to learn something about them and their families so I know what's going on at home," said Harrell. "I'm a lifelong east sider and huge supporter of the east side community. I absolutely love Disney and if I were ever to leave the district I wouldn't go to any other school! Disney is the best!"
